Law Zone : Laws relating to Drugs

Before you make any decisions about drugs make sure you know the facts. It’s easy to feel pressure from your mates to experiment, but it’s your body so think carefully about what drugs and drink will do to it.

Doing drugs – any drug, is a bad idea.




Class A drugs carry the heaviest penalties for possession, supply and production, followed by Class B and Class C. All illegal drug use has serious legal and health consequences. The table below shows examples of drugs and the maximum penalties which can be applied to them.

Class of Drug Examples

A

Cocaine, LSD, Heroin, Ecstasy

 Maximum Penalties
For possession: 7 year prison sentence and/or unlimited fine
For production/trafficking: Life imprisonment and/or fine

B

Amphetamines
All class B drugs become class A if injected

 Maximum Penalties
For possession: 5 year prison sentence and/or unlimited fine
For production: Life imprisonment and/or unlimited fine
For trafficking: 14 year prison sentence and/or fine

C

Cannabis

 Maximum Penalties
For possession: 5 year prison sentence and/or unlimited fine
For production: Life imprisonment and/or unlimited fine
For trafficking: 14 year prison sentence and/or fine

Remember, giving drugs to your friends is considered supplying and the same penalties relating to trafficking can apply.

If a police officer believes she or he has reasonable grounds to suspect someone of possessing drugs, they have the power to search that person and/or their vehicle. It is an offence to refuse to cooperate.
