Law Zone : Laws relating to Alcohol

Underage drinking doesn’t just affect your health; breaking the basic laws relating to alcohol has serious consequences too.

Remember:

  • It is illegal to buy alcohol if you are under 18.
  • If you are caught buying alcohol illegally from a licensed premises, the police can inform your parents or guardian.
  • It is illegal for anyone over 18 to buy or supply alcohol to under 18s.
  • The police will confiscate alcohol from anyone under the age of 18 found drinking in a public place. They do not have to refund you the money or return the alcohol at a later time.
  • If you are stopped for underage drinking the police will ask your name and address. You risk arrest and a fine if you refuse to give it to them.
  • It is an offence for anyone of any age to be drunk and disorderly in a public place.
